The Main Parts Of A Research Paper: 10 Points To Remember
Try breaking down your research paper into parts or sections rather than trying to work at is if you need to complete it all in one go. You will find that when you look at other people’s work that several of the sections are writing so as they are stand alone.
Work through these 10 points that will enable you to succeed in your writing.
- Check the instructions. It is always a good idea to read through the instructions several times, and ask your tutor about anything that you are not sure of. At this point start a project diary and write down your ideas as this will help you save time later.
- Choose your subject area. Choose a topic in your field of study that not just interests you but also enthuses you. If you are interested in your topic then you will be able to interest your reader.
- Decide on your thesis. Remember that at this point you may have an idea, but the words don’t fit together quite the way that you want them to. Getting the right words for your thesis statement takes time.
- Check out examples. Look for some free examples online. By doing this it will help you develop some of your own ideas and benefit you by looking at the differing qualities or work namely, average, poor and exceptional.
- Look for supporting evidence. Once you have your topic and an idea for your thesis, start looking for other work and target papers that link to your work. Decide on how much evidence you need.
- Time Management. When you start looking supporting evidence keep a track of what you are looking for and try not to get sidetracked. It is very easy to start looking for one aspect of your topic and end up looking at other interesting articles that are not related.
- Methodology. Ideally you need to be writing this as you go along or at least making notes. This is a really good time saver because if you leave it until later you will forget the order in which you did things or the reasons why.
- Abstract. Always leave the abstract until last. Not only will it save you time, but as you have completed all of the other sections, it will be easier to write and then condense to the final 150-200 words depending on the instructions you have been given.
- Drafts. Always write a draft, the point being that you cannot write this document and get everything just as you want it at the first attempt. Before you start the writing prepare an outline and fill in as much detail as you can.
- Proofread and Edit your work. Ideally get someone else to do the proofreading for you. Back to time management - allow yourself plenty of time to read through your work and do any edits before you submit.
