Seven Useful Tips For Writing A History Research Paper

Most academic classes will require essays during the course. The essay is not confined just to writing class or to English class. Because you are required to take history classes during the high school years, you will be assigned several papers. Here are seven helpful tips to help you navigate your way through your paper with ease.

Seven Tips for a Successful Paper

  1. Narrow down your topic-the subject area is very wide and you will need to narrow it down some. You can select from countries, states, battles, laws, religions, revolts, and many other components in the subject. You must narrow down the subject.
  2. You will need sources-no matter what topic you select, you will have to have valid and credible sources for support. You will need to have in-text citations and a reference page. Find out if your teacher wants you to use a specific format such as MLA or APA style.
  3. Consider focusing on a person-since you may have the opportunity to pick your topic and you want to pick a topic that interests you; consider picking an interesting person from the subject. You can write about a czar, a president, a Robber Baron, a general, a warrior, an inventor, or anyone else who might interest you.
  4. Compare and contrast-the compare and contrast style paper lends itself to the subject. You could compare two battles during the Civil War or compare two Kings of England. This type of paper is easy to write if you pick the correct topic.
  5. Be persuasive-another topic that lends itself to the subject is the persuasive format. You could convince your audience who the best president was or who the worst queen of England was.
  6. Have a strong thesis statement (or thesis paragraph)-you will find that higher-level subjects in this field often require a thesis paragraph as opposed to a thesis statement. Which ever your teacher requires, just make sure that the thesis is well crafted and contains powerful main points.
  7. Use a detailed outline-for success in writing the paper once you have a topic and a thesis statement, use a detailed outline as your guide. You would make the outline as one of your pre-writing steps.
