Directions on How to Write a Great Term Paper

Your term paper may be the largest piece of writing you have been assigned up to now, but it is completely feasible if you take the right approach. Here are few recommendations on how to deliver an excellent term paper without overstraining yourself.

  • Begin your work as early as possible.
  • As your term paper is due only in the end of semester, it may be tempting to put it off again and again. However, if you start a week or even a month before the deadline, you will have to rush through it and the result may be poor. Allow yourself enough time for profound research and accurate writing.

  • Choose a topic thoroughly.
  • Firstly, it should be interesting for you. You will hate writing such a long paper on what you do not care a straw about. Secondly, you should be able to find enough material on it. Before you make your final choice, do a preliminary research. See what books, articles, and electronic sources are available for each of two or three topics you like best. Thirdly, your topic should get approved by your professor or instructor. This way you will be sure you are moving in a right direction. Your professor may ask to narrow your topic down to something more manageable.

  • Plan your work.
  • Assign at least several hours each week to work on your term paper. Estimate the time you will need to complete major stages, e. g. research or writing your first draft. Allow a time reserve for unexpected delays.

  • Stay open-minded.
  • Do not be too sure of what results your research will yield, even if it seems obvious. Remember that nothing is pre-determined in research work; there is always room for unexpected findings. Be ready to document them.

  • Make an outline.
  • Estimate your word count for each major section, such as Introduction or Discussion, based on your total word count. Remember of these limitations and select only the most important information to be included. Treat your sections as separate mini-papers you have to write. This mental trick will make the scope of work much less intimidating.

  • Before drafting your paper, complete your bibliography.

    If you have a list of references close at hand, it will be much easier to cite your sources in the text where needed.

  • Be concise.
  • Do not add any words simply to boost up your word count. If you are concerned about falling short of it, look for more ideas or facts to discuss in your paper.
