Choosing The Most Outstanding Topics For Your Us History Research Paper

Given that the United States is over two hundred years old there is a lot of history to consider when choosing a topic. Here are a few things to remember when looking through the history of the U.S. for a topic:

  • Do not exhaust a topic
  • Do not choose anything too obscure
  • Choose a topic that is generally misunderstood nowadays
  • Do not exhaust a topic

A topic that is generally written about will eventually lose its appeal. The more someone writes about World War I or Pearl Harbor the less anyone will be willing to listen or read. If you are faced with picking a topic that has already been discussed to great lengths before, then try to find a different aspect or some lesser known facts about it. This will keep the paper from being too mundane while also supplying something that the reader most likely did not know before.

Do not choose anything too obscure

The lesser known something is the more work you will have to do. If you choose a historical point that is rarely talked about and even less well known then you will most likely have to spend a great deal of your paper informing your reader about the topic, before actually being able to get to the point. The downside to this is that most of your paper space will be eaten up trying to make sure your reader understands what happened historically and this can make transitioning from your recap to the actual point of the paper difficult. This is not to day that you should not choose a lesser known topic for your paper, just make sure it is not too obscure to the point where it detracts from your essay.

Choose a topic that is generally misunderstood nowadays

Listen to the media and it will not be hard to pick a topic that has been distorted. For instance, you could go along the lines of who really sold the Africans into slavery, or discuss the conditions of life on a plantation for slaves compared to that of workers in a factory in the North. Republicans and democrats are constantly at each other, you could research when the parties were made or what the republicans and democrats originally started out as compared to what they are now. The possibilities in this department are endless, even watching the History channel can provide the means for a worthy paper if you know what to look for.
